Vail Mountain School
A student should make every effort to get assistance from teachers rather than giving in to dishonesty when feeling overwhelmed. Plagiarism and similar behaviors have no place in a college preparatory program and in a school where trust is meant to set the standard. Students are asked to consider the following honor statement with each assignment they submit:
"I pledge to conduct myself in a trustworthy manner with compassion and integrity. All work I complete will be my own and I will give credit where it is due. I will hold myself accountable and will accept any consequences for my actions. I will not condone any breach of the Honor Code and I will help my peers to develop a greater sense of moral integrity and academic honesty. I will strive to represent the VMS community as a respectful, responsible, and caring individual both inside and outside of school."
This applies to homework, research, laboratory experiments, quizzes, exams and all other items that are turned in as the work of an individual student. A breach of honor may result in referral to a disciplinary committee. In the event of a second offense on any assignment, there will be an automatic discipline committee brought together to make a decision about the consequences, which may include a suspension from school. An offense on a major assignment (test, exam, final project) will prompt an automatic discipline committee meeting where the committee will make a decision about consequences, which may include a suspension from school.

Academic Integrity
All faculty, parents, and students are responsible for preserving the academic integrity of our school.
Academic integrity is achieved when each student:
Does his or her own work·
Completes all homework assignments in a timely manner and without copying from another student
Completes exams without seeking help from or offering help to another student during an exam period
Completes original research for a paper, project, oral presentation, or lab report that acknowledges another person’s contributions to the work by citing the source and name.
Refers to discipline and behavior policy for consequences for lack of integrity

Academic integrity is the foundation of the university as a community of scholars and learners. It defines the values we personally uphold, and it expresses a shared understanding why we do so.
Academic integrity includes:
A commitment to pursue truth.
A commitment to personal integrity.
A commitment to certain standards that express shared values.
[These aspects need to be suitably argued and defined.]
If you incorporate generated material into academic work, you assert that it accurately reflects the facts.
You further assert that all sources you have used in preparation, that go beyond common knowledge are attributed. Common knowledge is what a knowledgeable reader can assess without requiring confirmation from a source.
Specific assignments may have explicit requirements about the use of generated material. By submitting academic work you assert that you have respected these requirements, or have explained yourself where this was not possible.
If any of these assertions are not true, whether by intent or negligence, you have violated your commitment to truth, and possibly other aspects of academic integrity. This constitutes academic misconduct.
Academic misconduct is a violation of academic integrity, which is a commitment to the pursuit of truth, to personal integrity, and to specific standards that define academic communities. Specific categories of offenses like plagiarism are less suitable to define misconduct than deceit about whether rules for AI assistance were followed. Yet while a justified commitment to truth can ground a consistent ethical framework, our continued ability to detect deceit has become increasingly questionable. This emphasizes the need to cast the issue in a collaborative framework.
Promoting an intuition about the value of truth – not in a transactional way but as an aesthetic value – will be the key.
